Role Overview
We are seeking an experienced Mental Health Social Worker / Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHP) to join the Adult Social Care team based within East London NHS Foundation Trust (ELFT). You will provide person-centred, recovery-focused social work services to adults with mental health needs, promoting independence, safeguarding vulnerable adults, and delivering high-quality assessments and support planning within a multidisciplinary environment.
For qualified AMHPs, the role also includes carrying out statutory duties under the Mental Health Act 1983, including Mental Health Act assessments and emergency interventions.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct strengths-based, recovery-focused assessments in line with the Care Act 2014, Mental Health Act and Mental Capacity Act.
- Manage a caseload of adults with complex mental health and social care needs.
- Develop, implement and review personalised care and support plans.
- Undertake safeguarding enquiries, risk assessments, Mental Capacity Assessments and Best Interest decisions.
- Work collaboratively with health professionals, carers, housing, voluntary organisations and community services.
- Maintain accurate case records, reports and statutory documentation.
- Prepare court reports and attend legal proceedings where required.
- Promote independence, wellbeing, recovery and access to community resources.
- Ensure compliance with safeguarding, equality, anti-racism and professional practice standards.
Additional Responsibilities (AMHP Only)
- Undertake statutory Mental Health Act assessments.
- Make independent decisions regarding detention, Community Treatment Orders and Guardianship applications.
- Complete assessments in hospitals, community settings, police stations, courts and places of safety.
- Prepare legal documentation, warrants and court reports under the Mental Health Act.
- Prioritise AMHP referrals and provide expert advice on Mental Health Act practice.
Essential Requirements
- Degree in Social Work (DipSW/CQSW or equivalent).
- Registered with Social Work England.
- Experience in Adult Mental Health Social Work within a Local Authority or NHS setting.
- Strong knowledge of the Care Act 2014, Mental Health Act 1983, Mental Capacity Act 2005, DoLS/LPS and Adult Safeguarding.
- Experience undertaking Care Act assessments, risk assessments and safeguarding enquiries.
- Excellent report writing, case management and multidisciplinary working skills.
For AMHP Grade (PO4):
- Qualified Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHP).
- Current or recent AMHP warrant to practise.
- Extensive knowledge of Mental Health Act legislation and statutory practice.
