Job Title: Waste and Recycling Operative

Role Purpose

To safely and efficiently collect domestic and commercial waste and recycling, ensuring high standards of service delivery, compliance with health and safety regulations, and excellent customer service.

Key Responsibilities

• Collect domestic and commercial refuse and recycling in line with collection schedules and Council procedures.
• Safely operate alongside the driver, including acting as a banksman during vehicle manoeuvres.
• Handle bins, containers, and waste safely, returning receptacles to designated locations after collection.
• Report damaged bins, missed collections, overloaded bins, spillages, hazards, and other operational issues.
• Clean up spillages and maintain a clean and safe working environment.
• Use bin lifting equipment and machinery safely, following all health and safety procedures.
• Wear the required uniform and PPE at all times and comply with Council health and safety policies.
• Assist with replacement refuse sack deliveries and secure bin storage areas where required.
• Communicate effectively with colleagues and provide courteous assistance to members of the public.
• Support the loading of collection vehicles to ensure legal weight limits are maintained.
• Assist with training new employees when required.
• Undertake other duties appropriate to the grade of the role.

Essential Requirements

• Experience in waste collection or related environmental services.
• Knowledge of waste collection practices and safe manual handling.
• Good verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to work effectively as part of a team and independently.
• Physically fit and capable of lifting up to 25kg.
• Able to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
• Good awareness of health and safety procedures.
• Ability to follow written instructions and work to schedules.
• Good customer service and interpersonal skills.
• Flexible approach to working hours.
• Full, clean UK driving licence.

Desirable Requirements

• Relevant Health and Safety training.
• Previous local authority or waste management experience.
