Band 6 Biomedical Scientist – Haematology (Locum) – Scarborough, UK

We are offering an excellent opportunity for a Band 6 Biomedical Scientist to join the Haematology team in Scarborough, with a competitive rate of £26.00 per hour. This full-time locum post provides the chance to develop your specialist knowledge while contributing meaningfully to patient care in a busy and well-supported haematology laboratory.


Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct analysis of patient samples, Quality Control (QC), and External Quality Assessment (EQA) in line with departmental Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Quality Assurance policies.

  • Maintain the effective functioning of specialist laboratory equipment through regular housekeeping, troubleshooting, and preventive maintenance.

  • Validate and authorise patient results, and communicate technical findings clearly to clinicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals.

  • Participate in the department’s 24/7 shift rota, including evenings, weekends, and nights, often working independently to ensure critical results are processed without delay.


Essential Criteria

  • BSc in Biomedical Sciences or equivalent IBMS-accredited degree.

  • Registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) as a Biomedical Scientist.

  • Completion of the IBMS Specialist Portfolio, or substantial post-registration experience.

  • Full UK driving licence – essential due to potential travel between sites.


Desirable Experience

  • Routine experience with automated haematology platforms and blood film morphology.

  • Proficiency in automated blood grouping and antibody screening.

  • Previous exposure to haemoglobinopathy investigations and/or immunophenotyping (cell markers).

  • Familiarity with Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) and current diagnostic technologies.
