This is an exciting opportunity to join Birmingham Children’s Trust as a Youth Offending Officer, working within a dynamic Youth Justice Service. You will support children and young people who are at risk of entering, or are already involved in, the criminal justice system, helping to reduce re‑offending and promote positive outcomes.
What you will do
- Manage a caseload of children and young people subject to Youth Justice interventions.
- Complete assessments to identify risks, needs, and strengths using tools such as AssetPlus.
- Deliver targeted interventions aimed at reducing offending behaviour and improving life outcomes.
- Prepare high‑quality reports for court, including referral order and pre‑sentence reports.
- Attend Youth Court and contribute to multi‑agency panels and decision‑making forums.
- Work collaboratively with police, courts, education, health, and social care partners.
- Safeguard and promote the welfare of young people, identifying and responding to risk effectively.
- Support compliance with court orders, licences, and statutory requirements.
- Maintain accurate, timely, and compliant case records in line with service standards.
Requirements
Essential:
- Experience working with children or young people in youth justice, social care, probation, or a related field.
- Strong understanding of safeguarding, risk assessment, and offending behaviour.
- Experience preparing reports for courts or statutory processes.
- Ability to engage, motivate, and build effective relationships with vulnerable or challenging young people.
- Excellent communication, organisational, and analytical skills.
Desirable:
- Relevant qualification in Social Work, Youth Justice, Probation, Criminology, or a related field.
- Registration with Social Work England (for qualified Social Workers).
- Experience using AssetPlus or similar assessment frameworks.
- Previous experience within a Youth Offending Team (YOT) or Youth Justice Service.
