About the role
We are seeking an experienced Senior Practitioner to join the Pre-Birth Assessment Team in Birmingham. This is an ongoing locum opportunity offering flexibility alongside the chance to work at a senior level within children’s social care.
The role focuses on completing complex pre-birth assessments, addressing concerns around parental capacity, risk, and safeguarding of unborn children. You will lead on high-risk cases, contribute to key safeguarding decisions, and provide professional support and guidance to less experienced practitioners. Practice is aligned with Working Together to Safeguard Children, the Children Act 1989, and Birmingham Children’s Trust standards.

What you will do

Complete comprehensive pre-birth assessments involving complex risk factors such as domestic abuse, substance misuse, mental health concerns, and learning needs.

Analyse risk and protective factors to inform decision-making around child protection, legal planning, and early intervention.

Lead and manage complex child protection and pre-proceedings cases, ensuring unborn children are safeguarded.

Develop, implement, and review multi-agency plans to reduce risk and promote safe parenting.

Prepare high-quality, analytical reports for legal meetings, case conferences, and court proceedings.

Work closely with legal services, guardians, and partner agencies to meet statutory timescales.

Chair or contribute to strategy discussions and multi-agency meetings.

Act as a practice lead, offering reflective supervision, mentoring, and professional guidance to social workers.

Contribute to quality assurance, service development, and the promotion of best practice within the team.
