September Start
Salary: £28,000 – £31,000

Are you graduating this year with a 2:1 or above in a Humanities subject from a UK university?

Are you passionate about inspiring young people and looking to gain invaluable classroom experience before beginning teacher training?

An outstanding and high-performing secondary school in the London Borough of Bexley is seeking exceptional Humanities graduates to join its successful Humanities faculty as Graduate Teaching Assistants from September. We welcome applications from graduates specialising in History, Geography, Religious Studies, Politics, Sociology or Philosophy who are committed to pursuing a long-term career in secondary education.

This is a full-time position for the entire academic year, with the opportunity to remain beyond this period and progress onto a salaried or school-based teacher training programme.

The Role

Working alongside an experienced and supportive Humanities department, you will develop your teaching skills while supporting students across Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4. Depending on your degree specialism, you will primarily support lessons in your specialist subject while gaining wider experience across the Humanities curriculum.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Supporting pre-planned Humanities lessons within your subject specialism with experienced teachers.
  • Supporting students in developing critical thinking, analytical skills and subject knowledge.
  • Leading small-group intervention sessions and one-to-one academic support.
  • Assisting with lesson planning, marking and assessment.
  • Developing excellent classroom management and behaviour strategies.
  • Becoming fully involved in the wider life of the school and Humanities department.

Throughout the year, you will receive structured mentoring and ongoing professional development, preparing you for progression into teacher training.

Person Specification

To be considered, you must:

  • Be on track to achieve, or have already achieved, a 2:1 or First-Class degree from a UK university in History, Geography, Religious Studies, Politics, Sociology, Philosophy or a closely related Humanities subject.
  • Be committed to pursuing a long-term career in secondary teaching.
  • Be available to work full-time from September for the full academic year, with the possibility of continuing beyond.
  • Live within the London Borough of Bexley or within approximately one hour's commute of the school.
  • Demonstrate excellent communication skills and strong academic ability.
  • Be enthusiastic, resilient and passionate about helping young people succeed.
  • Previous experience working with young people is desirable but not essential.

Please note:

  • Applicants must already have the right to work in the UK.
  • Unfortunately, visa sponsorship is not available for this position.

Why Join This School?

  • High-performing and well-respected secondary school with an excellent academic reputation.
  • Outstanding mentoring from experienced Humanities teachers and senior leaders.
  • A clear pathway into a teacher training programme following successful completion of the role.
  • A collaborative and supportive school culture focused on developing future teachers.
  • Excellent transport links across Bexley and South East London.
  • The opportunity to build a rewarding, long-term career in education.
