Do you aspire to become an English teacher and want to gain meaningful classroom experience before embarking on teacher training?

An outstanding and high-performing secondary school in the Royal Borough of Greenwich is seeking an exceptional English graduate to join its successful English department as a Graduate Teaching Assistant from September. This is a full-time position for the entire academic year, with the opportunity to remain beyond this period and progress onto a salaried or school-based teacher training programme.

This opportunity is designed for ambitious graduates looking to build a long-term career in education.

The Role

Working alongside experienced English teachers, you will support students across Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 while developing the skills and confidence needed for a successful teaching career.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Supporting English lessons across KS3 and KS4.
  • Delivering small-group literacy interventions and one-to-one academic support.
  • Helping students develop reading, writing and analytical skills.
  • Assisting teachers with lesson preparation, classroom resources and assessment.
  • Supporting behaviour management and student engagement.
  • Becoming fully involved in the wider life of the English department and school community.

Throughout the year, you will receive structured mentoring and professional development, preparing you for progression into teacher training.

Person Specification

To be considered, you must:

  • Be on track to achieve, or have already achieved, a 2:1 or First-Class degree in English from a UK university.
  • Be committed to pursuing a long-term career in secondary English teaching.
  • Be available to work full-time from September for the full academic year, with the possibility of continuing beyond.
  • Live within the Royal Borough of Greenwich or within approximately one hour's commute of the school.
  • Demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Be enthusiastic, resilient and passionate about supporting young people.
  • Previous experience working with young people is desirable but not essential.
