We are looking for a dedicated Graduate Maths Teaching Assistant to join a welcoming secondary school in Birmingham. This is an exciting opportunity to take your mathematical knowledge beyond the university setting and use it to support young people in the classroom.
About the role
Working alongside the school's Maths department, you'll provide additional academic support to students who may need a little extra help to understand the curriculum and build their confidence.
You could be supporting students individually, working with small groups or assisting within lessons.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Providing 1:1 and small-group supportacross Maths
- Breaking down challenging mathematical concepts into clear, accessible explanations
- Helping students develop their problem-solving and reasoning skills
- Supporting pupils who lack confidence in Maths
- Assisting teachers with classroom activities and differentiated resources
- Encouraging students to become more independent learners
- Supporting positive engagement and participation during lessons
- Working closely with Maths teachers and wider support staff
- Providing feedback and observations on students' progress where appropriate
What are we looking for?
We're looking for a graduate who can bring strong mathematical knowledge and a genuine enthusiasm for helping others learn.
You will ideally have:
- A Mathematics or closely related degree, ideally at 2:1 or above
- Strong subject knowledge
- The ability to explain mathematical ideas clearly and confidently
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Patience and the ability to encourage students who lack confidence
- A positive, proactive approach
- A genuine interest in working with young people
Previous school experience isn't essential.
If you've got the subject knowledge and personality to connect with young people, we'd be interested in hearing from you. Experience working with children, tutoring or mentoring would be advantageous but is not required.
