A Mechanical Engineer is required to work on a defence project in Glasgow on a contract basis.
Role Purpose:
To work as part of a multi-disciplinary engineering team, directly supporting current operations and future programmes for nuclear facilities and services, The role involves the design, assessment, and substantiation of safety-related mechanical systems, structures, and components (SSC) to ensure compliance with operational and regulatory requirements in a high-hazard, defence environment.
Job Role Responsibilities:
- Author, develop, assess, maintain, and manage nuclear infrastructure design substantiation documents.
- Prepare and manage design changes/concessions.
- Present design substantiations to nuclear safety committees (“Due Process” reviews).
- Produce and develop Examination, Inspection, Maintenance & Testing (EIMT) schedules, procedures, and performance results.
- Produce and review Periodic Review of Safety reports.
- Provide technical advice and guidance to internal and external stakeholders.
- Prepare Independent Technical Assessment (ITA) / Independent Peer Review (IPR) scopes of work.
- Apply engineering principles to design, develop, operate, and maintain mechanical systems in a nuclear/high-risk environment.
- Produce technical justifications for design modifications in high-hazard industries.
- Review technical reports and safety case submissions from contractors.
- Check and verify calculations and technical documentation from other engineers.
Experience / Skills / Knowledge / Qualifications:
Essential:
- Experienced Mechanical Engineer with knowledge of industrial plant/machinery (e.g., pumps, generators).
- Knowledge of current design standards and working practices (British & European Standards).
- Experience across concept, detailed design, and construction stages of mechanical engineering projects (ideally industrial/maritime).
- Experience in assessing mechanical plant and equipment to withstand hazards.
- Proven ability to produce robust technical justifications for mechanical design modifications.
- Experience in multi-discipline engineering projects.
- Minimum HNC or equivalent qualification in a relevant discipline.
- Incorporated Engineer status or equivalent experience.
- Willingness to complete a Nuclear Introductory Course within 6 months if from a non-nuclear background.
Desirable:
- Experience in similar nuclear environments.
- Familiarity with safety case development techniques (HAZID/HAZOP).
- UK nuclear industry experience (energy or defence), particularly in safety-related SSCs.
- Knowledge of UK and US nuclear regulations and nuclear-specific codes/standards.
- Engineering degree.
- Chartered Engineer status.
