What you will do:
- Act as an autonomous practitioner providing occupational therapy assessment, treatment, and managing a caseload within an acute or specialty team, often without direct daily supervision.
- Perform specialist functional assessments of patients with diverse and complex physical and psychological conditions in acute hospital settings.
- Use remedial and compensatory approaches to treat occupational performance deficits employing recognised treatment methods within your scope of practice.
- Implement and facilitate individual and group clinical intervention programmes in collaboration with OT assistants and other professionals to support recovery and discharge planning.
- Assess patients' capacity for consent, ensuring valid informed consent is obtained within legal frameworks.
- Monitor, evaluate, and modify interventions to measure progress and ensure effectiveness.
- Manage and prioritise complex caseloads effectively, using time-management and caseload weighting tools.
- Conduct home and ward-based assessments, including equipment prescription and training on safe use (e.g., wheelchairs).
Supervision and Training:
- Supervise, train, and provide clinical supervision to Band 5 Occupational Therapists, therapy technicians, assistants, and students.
- Delegate appropriate tasks and treatment plans to therapy technicians and junior staff, ensuring competency prior to task delegation.
- Contribute to the induction, education, and appraisal of new and junior staff members.
- Act as a clinical supervisor to students of all levels and support their learning and development.
Multidisciplinary Teamwork and Communication:
- Liaise regularly with multidisciplinary team members, including medical, nursing, social services, and voluntary agencies, to provide integrated, comprehensive care.
- Attend and actively contribute to ward rounds, case conferences, multidisciplinary meetings, and discharge planning.
- Communicate effectively with patients and carers, including those with communication difficulties, to ensure understanding and cooperation with treatment plans.
- Write comprehensive reports on patient assessments, treatment outcomes, and recommendations for other healthcare professionals.
Service Development and Management:
- Participate in service development projects, clinical governance initiatives, audits, and evaluation of clinical pathways and policies.
- Take responsibility for the smooth running of the department as requested, including deputising for senior staff and cross-covering during absences.
- Contribute to operational planning and implementation of policy within the team.
- Manage financial and physical resources responsibly, including ordering and maintaining equipment and ensuring safe use.
Work Patterns and Flexibility:
- Work shifts including weekends, bank holidays, early and late shifts, often as part of a 7-day working rota to meet clinical needs.
- Be flexible to work across multiple hospital sites or wards as required to accommodate service demands.
Physical and Mental Effort:
- Undertake therapeutic handling of patients, manual moving and handling, and work in restricted spaces or varied environments including community settings.
- Manage competing demands, unpredictable work patterns, and maintain mental effort in complex assessment and treatment planning.
