New Job Opportunity - HV Electrical Engineer - 12 Month Contract - Based in Glasgow

Location: Glasgow – Hybrid

Contract: 12 Months ongoing Inside IR35

Rate: Negotiable dependent on experience

Summary of the Role

The Electrical Engineer (High Voltage) will be working as part of a multi-disciplinary engineering team within the Approval Authority. The primary purpose of the role is to directly support current operations and future programmes in respect to the high voltage system requirements, supporting nuclear facilities & the delivery of services across both of Our client’s Defence sites.

The team consists of Mechanical, Civil, Structural, Building Services, Electrical and Naval Architects who are responsible for the authorship, development, assessment, and maintenance of Engineering Design Substantiation for Our Client’s Nuclear Facilities, ensuring Design Intent, Critical Safety Factors and Safety and Operational Requirements are met and are consistent with current good practice and legislative/regulatory requirements.

Tasks

  • Authoring, development, assessment, maintenance and management of the suite of Our Client’s Nuclear Infrastructure Design Substantiation documents
  • Authoring, development, assessment, maintenance and management of design changes/concessions
  • Presentation of Our Client’s Design substantiations, to Our Client’s ‘Due Process’ nuclear safety committees
  • Production and development of Examination, Inspection, Maintenance & Testing (EIMT) Schedule, operating procedures and results to satisfy design requirements and safety case through life
  • Producing/assessing Periodic Review of Safety reports
  • Providing advice and direction to internal and external stakeholders
  • Production of Independent Technical Assessment (ITA)/Independent Peer Review (IPR) Scopes of work
  • Use a combination of general and specialist engineering knowledge and understanding to apply existing and emerging technology
  • Apply appropriate theoretical and practical methods to design, develop, manufacture, construct, commission, operate, maintain, decommission and re-cycle engineering processes, systems, services and products in a nuclear/high risk environment
  • Producing robust technical justification to allow for relevant high voltage electrical design modifications to be authorised within a high hazard industry
  • Review technical reports and other safety case submissions from external contractors
  • Check and review calculations and technical documents written by other members of staff

Position Requirements

Experience

Essential:

  • Experienced Electrical Engineer with previous knowledge of industrial plant and machinery in an HV environment (i.e. HV electrical supply network including cabling, substations, etc.)
  • Knowledge of current design standards and working practices including British & European Standards
  • Theoretical and practical skill and experience across concept design, detailed design and construction stages across a range of electrical engineering projects (ideally including industrial and/or maritime)
  • Experience in the design assessment of HV electrical plant and equipment to withstand hazards
  • Experience of authoring and producing robust technical justification and supporting documentation to allow for relevant electrical design modifications to be authorised within a high hazard industry
  • Experience working on multi-discipline projects providing engineering input (ideally within industrial and/or maritime)

Desirable:

  • Ideal candidates would already have experience within Defence or nuclear environment
  • Familiarity with safety case development techniques e.g. HAZID/HAZOP studies
  • Experience of working in the UK nuclear industry (energy or defence), particularly in the design and assessment of safety-related structures, systems and components
  • Knowledge of UK and US nuclear industry regulation and practice, and application of relevant nuclear-specific codes and standards

Qualifications & Training

Essential:

  • For non-nuclear background candidates, a Nuclear introductory course would be required to be undertaken within 6 months of joining
  • Minimum HNC or equivalent qualification in a relevant discipline
  • Incorporated Engineer status or equivalent experience

Desirable:

  • Engineering degree
  • Chartered Engineer
