Role purpose

As Deputy Team Manager, you will support the Team Manager in leading and developing the Children in Care Team, ensuring consistently high standards of practice and positive outcomes for children and young people looked after by the States of Guernsey. You will provide operational leadership, professional supervision, and case oversight while promoting excellent social work practice.


What you will do

  • Support the Team Manager with the day-to-day operational management of the Children in Care Team.

  • Provide reflective supervision, guidance, and professional support to social workers, including NQSWs.

  • Lead on case oversight, quality assurance, and performance management, ensuring statutory timescales are met.

  • Act as Deputy Team Manager, covering for the Team Manager when required.

  • Hold a reduced but complex caseload, including care proceedings, placement planning, and permanency planning.

  • Oversee care planning, looked after reviews, pathway planning, and transition arrangements.

  • Ensure children’s wishes, feelings, and lived experiences are central to all assessment and planning.

  • Provide expert advice on court work, care planning, and permanence options including long-term fostering and adoption.

  • Work collaboratively with partner agencies including education, health, CAMHS, fostering services, and commissioning teams.

  • Represent the service at multi-agency meetings, reviews, and court proceedings as required.

  • Ensure safeguarding responsibilities are met in line with legislation, policy, and local procedures.


Essential requirements

  • Degree or equivalent qualification in Social Work.

  • Registered with Social Work England (or eligible for registration).

  • Significant post-qualifying experience within Children’s Social Care, specifically Children in Care / Looked After Children.

  • Experience providing supervision and professional support to social work staff.


Desirable

  • Experience in a Senior Social Worker, Deputy Team Manager, or Practice Lead role.

  • Experience working within smaller services or island communities.

  • Post-qualifying leadership or management training.
