Role Purpose

To deliver high-quality, statutory social work services to children and families from initial referral through to completion of assessments. The role involves safeguarding decision-making, managing risk, and planning appropriate interventions to support children’s safety and development.


Key Responsibilities

  • Initial Contact: Respond to referrals from MASH or the Contact Centre with prompt home visits and direct child and family engagement.

  • Statutory Assessments: Undertake Child and Family Assessments (under Sections 17 or 47, Children Act 1989) to determine the needs, risks, and required interventions.

  • Safeguarding Decisions: Apply professional judgment to assess thresholds and take necessary action, including escalation to Child Protection or Looked After Children services.

  • Multi-Agency Coordination: Work closely with external agencies including education, health, police, and third-sector organisations to ensure holistic support.

  • Care Pathways: Transition cases into long-term teams with clearly outlined care plans and measurable outcomes.

  • Court Work: Prepare detailed court reports and evidence as required, and liaise with legal representatives and guardians.

  • Case Compliance: Maintain accurate, up-to-date records in line with the Social Services and Well-being (Wales) Act 2014, using the WCCIS system.


Essential Criteria

Qualifications:

  • Degree in Social Work or equivalent

  • Registered with Social Care Wales

Experience:

  • Demonstrated experience in frontline statutory social work, especially within child assessment and safeguarding

  • Solid understanding of the Social Services and Well-being (Wales) Act 2014

Skills:

  • Excellent assessment and analytical capability

  • Confident written and verbal communication, especially for court and multi-agency reports

  • Proficient in case management systems and digital tools


Desirable Criteria

  • Ability to communicate in Welsh

  • Experience using WCCIS (Welsh Community Care Information System)

  • Completed ASYE or 2+ years post-qualified experience
