Road Import Operations Manager Location: Thames Gateway AreaSalary: £45,000 - £48,000Fully office based Our client, a well-established freight forwarding business, is looking to appoint a Road Import Operations Manager to join their team in the Basildon area.This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced freight forwarding professional with a strong background in import operations, specifically European road freight, who can lead a team, manage operational workflows, oversee customs activity, and help drive commercial performance across the department.  About the Role As Road Import Operations Manager, you will be responsible for leading and developing the Import Operations function, ensuring the efficient, compliant, and commercially effective management of European road freight imports.The successful candidate will oversee day-to-day operational workflow, service delivery, financial performance, and cross-departmental coordination. You will also oversee the offshore Customs Processing Team, ensuring declarations are completed accurately and on time, while maintaining strong communication and performance management across both functions.  Main Responsibilities Lead and manage the Import Operations team, ensuring smooth daily workflow and high service levelsOversee trailer arrivals, inbound planning, documentation flow, and coordination with internal departmentsManage workflow allocation, staffing levels, annual leave, and sickness absence across the teamMonitor team performance, provide coaching, and support staff developmentEnsure departmental processes and SOPs are followed and updated where requiredMonitor departmental budgets, margins, and cost controls to support profitabilityEnsure accurate invoicing, quote sheets, import spreadsheets, and financial reportingProvide regular operational and performance updates to senior managementOversee the offshore Customs Processing Team, ensuring accurate and timely declarations across air, sea, and road freightMaintain working knowledge of customs procedures, tariff classifications, and duty/VAT principlesEnsure customs data is accurate and maintained in line with HMRC requirementsAct as a key point of contact for operational and customs-related communicationLiaise with overseas agents, customers, hauliers, and internal teams to coordinate shipments and resolve issuesEnsure shipment documentation is created, maintained, and stored correctlyIdentify and mitigate operational and customs-related risksCross-train and provide cover across the wider department where required   Key Requirements Significant experience in import operations within a freight forwarding environmentStrong background in European road freight imports is essentialProven experience leading and managing teams, including workflow allocation, staff development, and performance managementStrong understanding of import operational workflows, including trailer arrivals, inbound planning, and documentation flowHigh level of commercial awareness, including budgets, margins, and cost controlWorking knowledge of customs procedures, tariff classifications, and duty/VAT principlesExperience liaising with overseas agents and coordinating international shipmentsStrong communication and organisational skillsHigh attention to detail and commitment to compliance and data accuracyAbility to manage multiple priorities and deadlines effectively Desirable experience includes managing offshore or remote customs teams, HMRC audit readiness, process improvement initiatives, and freight management or customs systems knowledge.  Additional Information As the business operates within a regulated environment, the successful candidate will be required to complete background checks, including a DBS check. The incoming candidate will benefit from a substantial handover period, dependant on your notice period.Due to the complexity of the work, the role would ideally suit someone currently working within London insurance/claims markets or Manchester's established marine cargo hub. Remote working can be considered; however, the successful candidate must be able to work hybrid or fully on-site during the handover period, which may last a number of months. The Role The Marine Cargo Claims Manager will oversee a global claims operation covering freight liability, marine cargo, logistics claims, and associated legal matters. Responsibilities include: Managing the Group Claims department and supporting global offices.Handling freight liability and marine cargo claims from first notification through to settlement, including recoveries.Liaising with insurers, surveyors, legal teams, clients and internal stakeholders.Advising on contract drafting, risk assessment and cargo acceptance policies.Leading training across group offices on relevant legal, insurance and claims topics.Compiling workflow, renewal and performance reports.Contributing to systems development and continuous improvement.Managing the Group Freight Liability insurance policy.Reporting at Board and Director level. Required Experience The successful Marine Cargo Claims Manager must demonstrate: Strong experience in marine cargo and freight transport liability claims.Deep understanding of the legal frameworks governing international transport, including CMR, Hague/Hague-Visby, Warsaw/Montreal Conventions, BIFA, FIATA, COGSA, UKWA and Incoterms.Experience with insurance law (Marine Insurance Act, Insurance Act 2015, etc.) and policy interpretation.Ability to manage complex, high-value global claims.Proven managerial capability and confidence when reporting at senior and Board level.High competency with Microsoft 365.Experience issuing Bills of Lading, AWBs, Letters of Credit and other cargo documentation is highly desirable.ACII qualification and/or a Law degree would be advantageous. This role will not suit someone from hull, machinery or non-cargo marine insurance backgrounds. Why This Role?
