Purpose of the Role

To provide advanced social work practice, case management, and leadership within the Children’s Locality Team. The Senior Social Worker manages complex cases, delivering statutory interventions, safeguarding, and direct support to children and families, while mentoring junior social workers.


Key Responsibilities

Case Management & Assessment

  • Conduct comprehensive assessments in line with statutory guidelines.

  • Develop, implement, and review Child in Need and Child Protection Plans.

  • Manage complex cases involving neglect, abuse, or high-risk behaviour.

  • Maintain accurate, timely case records and reports.

Leadership & Professional Support

  • Mentor and support junior staff, fostering reflective practice and professional growth.

  • Provide expert guidance on complex cases and decision-making processes.

Safeguarding & Risk Management

  • Identify safeguarding concerns and implement appropriate interventions.

  • Undertake risk assessments and contribute to risk management plans.

Multi-Agency Collaboration

  • Work collaboratively with health, education, police, and voluntary sector partners.

  • Participate in child protection conferences and advocate for children’s needs.

Statutory & Operational Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with statutory deadlines and quality standards.

  • Engage in audits and service improvement initiatives.


Person Specification

  • Degree or equivalent in Social Work with current Social Work England registration.

  • Proven post-qualifying experience, particularly in safeguarding and child protection.

  • Experience mentoring junior social workers and managing complex cases.

  • Strong communication, organisation, and professional judgement skills.
