Graduate Sixth Form Academic Mentor: Person Specification

  • Graduate Sixth Form Academic Mentor role: Must have a 2:1 or above (achieved or predicted) from a leading university in any subject
  • A naturally confident nature, belief in the importance of learning and the ability to encourage the best in people
  • A strong interest in establishing a career working with young people – Teaching, Educational Psychology, Pastoral Support or SENCO
  • A strong interest in building strong and meaningful relationships with pupils
  • Emotionally attuned, calm and resilient – with a compassionate but professional approach to working with young people
  • Previous experience working with young people (in education, youth work or mental health) is desirable but not essential
  • To be a successful Graduate Sixth Form Academic Mentor you must have the desire to learn, grow and engage in training

Graduate Sixth Form Academic Mentor: Role Overview

This is a pastoral-facing role in a dynamic Sixth Form setting in South London. You will work closely with Sixth Form leaders to support students aged 16–18, many of whom are navigating significant academic pressures alongside emotional, social or mental health challenges.

As a Graduate Sixth Form Academic Mentor, you will:

  • Provide pastoral mentoring to individual students – supporting their emotional wellbeing, personal development and academic motivation
  • Identify students in need of additional support and implement targeted, nurturing interventions
  • Help students develop positive habits around self-regulation, resilience, attendance and study routines
  • Offer practical guidance around stress, anxiety, confidence, and life beyond school
  • Monitor and support students’ mental health, wellbeing and social adjustment – escalating concerns when necessary
  • Support students with career and progression plans, including UCAS and job applications
  • Contribute to safeguarding and work closely with pastoral leaders, SENCOs, families and external agencies

This is a full-time role. Your working hours will be 8:00am – 4:00pm, Monday-Friday.

This role offers direct progression into teacher training, if you’re looking for a year of experience, this could be a great fit for you. There are also opportunities available for graduates interested in Psychology/SENCO routes to work alongside professionals in a real-world environment.
