This is a rare and exciting opportunity for an experienced Senior Solicitor to join a local authority legal team in Staffordshire. Depending on your area of expertise, you will manage complex legal matters across children’s social care, adult social care, or local authority litigation, providing authoritative advice and representation that supports effective governance and public protection.

What you will do

• Manage a diverse and complex caseload of local authority legal matters.
• Provide high‑quality legal advice to council departments, senior officers, and elected members.
• Represent the council in courts, tribunals, and formal hearings with confidence and authority.
• Draft, review, and negotiate complex legal documents, pleadings, and agreements.
• Lead on high‑profile or sensitive cases, particularly within childcare, safeguarding, or adult social care where required.
• Support, supervise, and mentor junior lawyers and legal support staff, promoting best practice and professional development.
• Contribute to policy development and ensure compliance with current legislation and statutory duties.
• Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of legislation, guidance, and case law relevant to local government practice.

Requirements

Essential:

• Qualified Solicitor, Barrister, or Chartered Legal Executive with a current practising certificate.
• Significant post‑qualification experience within local government or a relevant public sector legal environment.
• Strong knowledge of legislation such as the Children Act 1989, Care Act 2014, and/or litigation processes, depending on specialism.
• Proven ability to manage complex and high‑risk legal cases independently.
• Excellent advocacy, negotiation, and communication skills.

Desirable:

• Previous experience working within a local authority legal team.
• Experience supervising or mentoring junior legal staff.
• Specialist accreditation in childcare law or related legal disciplines.
• Advocacy experience in higher courts.
