Location: Melrose, Scottish Borders
Pay Rate: £60 flat on-call rate / £45 per hour when called out / £30 per call

The Role – Out-of-Hours Mental Health Officer
As an Out-of-Hours Mental Health Officer, you will provide urgent mental health support outside of standard working hours. You will respond to crisis situations, assess individuals’ mental health needs, and take appropriate action in line with statutory guidelines and local protocols.
You will work closely with multi-agency partners including NHS mental health teams, social work services, and law enforcement to ensure safe, timely, and effective care.
Key Responsibilities – Out-of-Hours Mental Health Officer

Respond to out-of-hours mental health referrals and crises

Conduct mental health assessments and risk evaluations

Implement appropriate interventions and support plans

Liaise with NHS, social work, and police colleagues to coordinate care

Maintain accurate and timely records of all contacts and interventions

Provide professional advice and support to on-call colleagues

Contribute to safeguarding and public protection processes
Requirements

Relevant social work or mental health qualification

Registration with the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) or equivalent

Experience in mental health assessment and crisis intervention

Knowledge of Scottish mental health legislation and best practice

Strong communication, decision-making, and report-writing skills

Ability to work independently during on-call periods and under pressure
