Purpose of the Role

To assist in the management and day-to-day duties associated with the safe and appropriate movement of people and traffic across Derbyshire by applying effective traffic management techniques. The postholder will contribute to maintaining an efficient, safe, and reliable road network through coordination of activities, monitoring, and communication with key stakeholders.

Key Relationships

  • Works closely with colleagues within Network Planning.
  • Collaborates with Highways Design and Maintenance, Street Lighting, Development Control, and Asset Management teams.
  • Engages with the Midlands Abnormal Loads Group.
  • Line managed by the Senior Project Engineer – Highways Hub.

Key Result Areas / Responsibilities

  • Maintain an efficient road network by reducing or preventing congestion and disruption through the coordination of roadworks and events.
  • Assist with the preparation of correspondence, reports, and documentation relating to network planning and traffic management matters.
  • Develop and implement an abnormal loads notification system to ensure the safe and reliable operation of the highway network.
  • Coordinate and approve the movement of abnormal loads throughout Derbyshire in accordance with regulations and safety requirements.
  • Contribute to the development of solutions addressing the safety and needs of all road users.
  • Manage and respond to matters associated with roadworks and special events to minimise interruptions to traffic flow.
  • Undertake site visits and traffic movement inspections, including occasional work outside of normal office hours.
  • Implement and maintain management data systems to identify heavily trafficked structures.
  • Identify routes requiring inclusion in the county’s resilient network.
  • Prepare letters, reports, and technical assessments for internal and external stakeholders within agreed timescales.
  • Investigate and respond to data enquiries related to the movement of abnormal loads.
  • Liaise with external organisations regarding abnormal load movements and roadworks coordination.
  • Update and assist with the management of highway asset inventory data.
  • Support Civil Parking activities, ensuring appropriate maintenance of traffic signs and road markings.
  • Assist with Parking Compliance Surveys and respond to parking-related appeals as required.

Person Requirements (Desirable Attributes)

  • Knowledge or experience in traffic management, highways, or transport planning.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to liaise effectively with internal teams and external stakeholders.
  • Excellent organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Competent IT user with experience in asset management or traffic data systems.
  • Practical and analytical approach to problem-solving.
  • Commitment to maintaining safe, efficient, and sustainable transport networks.
