Job Purpose:

As a Cleansing Driver, you will play a key role in maintaining clean and safe streets by operating HGVs, mechanical sweepers, or refuse vehicles to collect waste, trade waste, or skips. You will also provide on-the-ground leadership to support staff performance, safety, and service standards.
Key Responsibilities:
- Drive HGVs and other council vehicles in line with legal and safety regulations.
- Collect household waste, trade waste, or skips as part of routine or scheduled services.
- Provide clear instructions to other staff, ensuring adherence to safe working practices and performance standards.
- Use lifting equipment safely and correctly, following all health and safety protocols.
- Read and interpret work schedules, maps, and route data to ensure timely and accurate collections.
- Operate in-cab technologies and complete required records such as tachographs, timesheets, and incident reports.
- Inspect and carry out basic vehicle maintenance checks, reporting any issues as required.
- Identify and report waste-related issues, unsafe driving conditions, or other operational concerns.
- Support team leaders in adjusting routes or staff deployment to maintain service delivery.
- Maintain a positive and professional image when interacting with members of the public.
- Undertake refuse loading or other street cleansing duties as needed.
- Participate in required training and development to maintain service standards and compliance.
Person Specification:
- Driving Licence: Holds a valid LGV Class C+E licence and CPC, allowing you to drive vehicles up to 44 GLVD (e.g. HGVs)
- Safety: Banksman trained and able to move vehicles safely
- Physical Capability: Able to carry out physically demanding work, including bending, lifting, walking, and working outdoors in various conditions
- Health Screening: Willing to undergo medical and other relevant occupational risk assessments
- Communication & Literacy: Able to complete records (e.g. timesheets, incident reports) and interpret basic instructions
- Numeracy & IT: Comfortable inputting basic data into digital systems and using in-cab technology
