You will deliver high-quality, specialist physiotherapy assessment and treatment within the acute hospital setting, playing a key role in patient recovery, safe discharge planning, and optimising functional outcomes.

Job Purpose

To provide high-quality, evidence-based physiotherapy assessment and treatment to patients within the acute hospital setting. You will independently manage a complex caseload, support safe and timely discharges, and work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team to achieve optimal patient outcomes.


Key Responsibilities

As a Band 6 Physiotherapist, you will:

  • Assess, treat, and manage patients with acute medical, surgical, respiratory, and complex conditions.

  • Apply advanced clinical reasoning to develop and implement evidence-based treatment plans.

  • Deliver respiratory care, mobility interventions, and rehabilitation programmes as required.

  • Assess functional ability, falls risk, and discharge needs.

  • Contribute to rapid discharge planning, including same-day discharge and discharge-to-assess pathways.

  • Provide education, advice, and support to patients, families, and carers.


Multidisciplinary Working

  • Work closely with MDT colleagues including doctors, nurses, occupational therapists, therapy assistants, and discharge teams.

  • Participate in board rounds, MDT meetings, and discharge planning discussions.

  • Liaise with community services to ensure continuity of care following discharge.


Leadership, Supervision & Education

  • Support, supervise, and mentor Band 5 physiotherapists, therapy assistants, and students.

  • Act as a role model, providing day-to-day clinical guidance to junior staff.

  • Contribute to service development, audit, and quality improvement initiatives.


Governance & Professional Practice

  • Maintain accurate, timely, and high-quality clinical documentation in line with Trust policies.

  • Ensure practice complies with CSP, HCPC, and Trust standards.

  • Identify, manage, and escalate clinical risks appropriately.

  • Participate in appraisal, CPD, mandatory training, and in-service education.


Person Specification

Essential:

  • Degree or Diploma in Physiotherapy

  • HCPC registration as a Physiotherapist

  • Post-qualification experience within an acute or hospital-based setting

  • Ability to independently manage a complex caseload

  • Strong communication, organisational, and clinical reasoning skills

Desirable:

  • Experience in respiratory care, frailty, or acute medical/surgical wards

  • Experience supervising staff or students

  • Knowledge of NHS discharge pathways and community services

  • Experience using electronic patient record systems
